An object is propelled vertically upward rom the top af a112-foot building. the quadratic function s(t) = 16t^2 + 176t + 112 models the ball's height above the ground, s(t), in feet, t seconds after it was thrown. How many seconds does it take until the object finally hits the ground. Round to the nearest tenth of a second if necessary.
Please help me. I am just not getting this. Thank you.

I tried to do it by dividing by the common factor of 2(x-1)-12,but the answer in the book is, p=2(x-1/2)2 (square)- 49/2 or (.5-24.50 how did they get this. thank you sadie

Question 30689: This is my original question and I keep coming up with the same answer as the tutor but my book says the answers are -5 and 2. Is that possible?
2x^2-x=1 original equation
2x^2-x-1=0 set the equation to zero
2x^2-2x+x-1=0 the product leading coefficient and the constant is -2 (two numbers that add up to -1 and are multiplied to get the -2 is: -2 and 1)
(2x^2-2x)+(x-1)=0 start to combine
2x(x-1)+1(x-1)=0 take out the factors
(2x+1)(x-1)=0 set them to zero
2x+1 = 0 ; 2x = -1 ; x = -1/2
x-1 = 0 ; x = 1
1 and (-1/2) are your answers

Question 30763: Publishing costs. The cost, in dollars, of publishing x books is C(x)=40,000+20x+0.0001x^2. How many books can be published for 250,000?
Do I set 40,000+20x+0.0001x^2=250,000 then subtract the 250,000 so the equation =0 and then use the quadratic formula to solve? Could someone show me the correct equation for this problem?

Question 30765: Solve the quadratic equation by using the quadratic formula.
This is what I get:
2x^2+4x=-1
2x^+4x+1=0
x=[-(4)+or- sqrt(4)^2-4(2)(1)]/[2(2)]
x=[-4+or-sqrt16-8]/4
x=[-4+or-sqrt8]/4
my answer x=[-4+or-2sqt2]/4
my bookk says its:
x=[-2+or-sqrt2]/2
How do they get there?

Y=2x^2-9x=4. A graph in included in the question.
the method that is being used by my teacher is where we solve for y( crosses y axis when x=0). In this case y=4. But i get confused factorising to find x.

This is a far as I got...
x(x+4)
x^2+4x+c=0
-4/2=-2
2^2+4(-2)+c=0
4-8+c=0
-4+c=0
c=4
x^2+4x+4=0
(x+2)(x+2)
x=-2 and -2+4=2
This is where I realize that something is not quite right...
