The parabola has many important applications, from automobile headlight reflectors to the design of ballistic missiles. They are frequently used in physics, engineering, and many other areas.
Parabaloids (three-dimensional parabolas) are used for many, many things, most notably radar dishes, dish antennas (e.g., for TVs, cell phone towers, and space listening posts), sound enhancing devices, mirrors, etc. There are lots of applications in real life.
