Question 761197: I am taking college algebra so I am not sure if this site is available for college students or not...
The directions are. (Solve each equation).
(x-3)^2/5=4
the 2 indicates the index and the 5 means it is raised to the 5th power.

OKAY _ CLARIFICATION GIVEN - See BELOW!
College Algebra for college students is perfectly acceptable to the site.

Unfortunately, your problem description is confusing. What number are you giving an index? At best, this means nothing. Your 5 as exponent apparantly means %28x-3%29%5E5, but your wrote it for the wrong meaning.

Are you asking for %28x-3%29%5E5=4 and want solution for x? Best might be use logarithms. ...Maybe.

%28%28x-3%29%5E5%29%5E%281%2F5%29=4%5E%281%2F5%29
x-3=4%5E%281%2F5%29
highlight%28x=3%2B4%5E%281%2F5%29%29
From which you can first use logartihm knowledge to exponentiate the 4, and then perform a computation to find a value for x.
In case that does not show right, the exponent is "one fifth power".

If this is not aligned to what you are hoping for, then give the exact problem description and try posting the question again.

CLARIFICATION FOUND---------------

You want highlight%28%28sqrt%28x-3%29%29%5E5=4%29 solved for x.

Same then as %28%28x-3%29%5E%281%2F2%29%29%5E5=4
%28x-3%29%5E%285%2F2%29=4
Raise both sides to %282%2F5%29 power,
x-3=4%5E%282%2F5%29
x=3%2B%282%5E2%29%5E%282%2F5%29
highlight%28x=3%2B2%5E%284%2F5%29%29

Not sure what you mean by "the 2 indicates the index and the 5 means it is raised to the 5th power." If you are raising something to the 5th power, it should look like x^5, which would be interpreted as . What you rendered looks like you are raising the binomial to the 2/5 power, which is to say taking the 5th root of the binomial squared, thus: which is equivalent to .

If you are having difficulty rendering mathematical expressions in plain text, refer to Formatting Math as Text for guidance. Once you get it figured out what you really mean, please repost.

As suggested by solver, you need to repost. The answer to the equation is x = 67, if it's what I assume it to be.

Why did you go into all that you went into, when all you had to do was place parentheses appropriately, as follows: (x - 3)^(2/5) = 4. This would've worked perfectly without all that stuff you wrote about index and power. This is how the equation (x - 3)^(2/5) = 4 would look:

highlight_green%28%28x+-+3%29%5E%282%2F5%29+=+4%29. Is this what you meant, or was it highlight_green%28%28%28x+-+3%29%5E2%29%2F5+=+4%29?

You need to clarify!!
