Before studyimg continuity, you must have worked on limits.
lim F(x)= lim x^2+1 = 2
x-->1+ x-->1+

lim F(x)= lim 2x = 2
x-->1- x-->1-

F(1)= 2(1)=2
then lim F(x)= lim F(x)= F(1) then F(x) is continuous at x=1
... x-->1+ ... x-->1-
