Question 7689: Here is the problem. I tried several ways but I'm probably way off.
Swimming pool. The length of a rectangular swimming pool is 2x - 1 meters, and the width is x + 2 meters. Write a polynomial that represents the area. Find the area if x is 5 meters.
So, this is what I did.
(2x - 1)(x + 2)
(10-1) (5 + 2)
9 * 7 = 63
Area = 63 meters
OR......
(2x - 1)^2(x + 2)^2
(10-1)^2 (5 + 2)^2
9^2 * 7^2
81 * 49
Area = 3969 meters (I think this one is wrong)
OR..... using FOIL
(2x -1) (x + 2)
2x^2 + 4x - x - 2
2x^2 + 3 - 2
2x^2 + 1
2(5)^2 +1
Area = 51 meters
OR....
Multiplying vertically
2x - 1
x + 2
4x - 2
2x^2 +x
2x^2 + 5x - 2
50 + 25 - 2
Area = 73 meters
I tried, please tell me if I'm close. Thanks so much in advance for your help. I really appreciate it.

Question 8591: I have two problems that I am stuck on.
1. 5z^2 - 4z + 1= 0
this is how I started.
5z^2 - 4z = -1
5z^2 4z + 4 = -1 + 4
(z-2)^2 = -3
z-2 = plus or minus i the square root of -3
2 + - i / 5
I dont even know if this is correct.
2. 5t^2 + 4t - 3 = 0
5t^2 + 4t = 3
5t^2 - 4z + 4 = 3 - 4
(t + 2)^2 = -1
t + 2 = =/- -1
then I'm lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks in advance for helping me with this problem. I found the answer, but through guess and check, so it would be very helpful if you could tell me how to find the answer mathematicaly.
Mark and David both own a lot of Matchbox cars. Mark owns seven times the square root of the amount David owns. Together they own the square root of 9 multiplyed be the quotient of 27,150 and 181. How many cars do they own in all? How many cars does each boy own? Who owns more?
This really stumped me, but I found an answer.
Mark owns 126 cars.
David owns 324 cars.
Together they own 450 cars.
David owns more.
Thanks again in advance and I can't wait to hear from you.

Question 10210: Here is the question:
If the length of a rectangular field is 8 feet more than double its width. Find the dimensions of the filed if its area is 540 square feet?
I know you have to use A = l * w, but how do you start. I started like this:
540 = (8 + x) ( x^2)
would it then be : 540 = 8x + x^2?
Then do you have to subtract 540 from the left side to bring it to the right?
8x + x^2 - 540 = 0
