Question 737254: Hi, my teacher taught me how to do the Tic Tac Toe method to get the binomials for a quadratic, but we have a test sooner than I expected and I'm trying to study and getting frustrated. I was taught to enter from the quadratic in order (from top left to top right)quadratic, constant, then multiply and put the product in the top right. Then you factor vertically for the quadratic and multiplied answer, and do the same for the constant to fit where it makes sense and you can multiply across each horizontal group of 3 and it will work. That's what my notes say and I feel like I'm doing it right but this site says otherwise and I can't find many other sites that have free practice questions.

Question 737529: Find the coordinates of the vertex and the intercepts of f(x)=5x^2+17x-12. When necessary, approximate x- intercepts to the nearest tenth.
I'll show what I got so far:
a=5, b=17
x=-b/2a
x=-17/10 x=-1.7
f(-1.7)=5(-1.7)^2+17(-1.7)-12
f(-1.7)=14.45 -28.9 -12
f(-1.7)=-26.45
vertex=(-1.7,-26.5)
Applying the quadratic formula I get the following:
x=(-17+-23)/10
(-4,0)(3/5,0)
Was that correct?
