Question 998321: I've got an equation that I can't seem to get the right answer. Word problems are not a strength of mine so I need some help. The question is:
Length of a rectangle is twice its width. If area is 120 sq meters, find length and width. Does l=2(w) or l=w^2? Since A=L*W, my equation would look like this: 120=2w*w. I would subtract 120 from both sides to get 2w*w-120=0 or I wouldn't do that. Can you help me?

Just write an equation for each statement
Substitute
Follow the rules of algebra to solve the equation
:
Length of a rectangle is twice its width.
L = 2W
If area is 120 sq meters, find length and width.
L * W = 120
replace L with 2W from the 1st statement
2W * W = 120
2W^2 = 120
Simplify, divide both sides by 2
W^2 = 60
Find the square root of both sides
W = sqrt%2860%29
W = 7.746 m is the width
Then using the 1st equation, find L
L = 2(7.746)
L = 15.492 m is the length
