if you factor and group the terms, it is easier to see...36%28x%5E2-10x%29-25%28y%5E2-4y%29=100

now, complete the squares of the x and y expressions...but remember...terms that you add to complete the squares are multipled by the corresponding coefficients... eg when you add 25 to complete the square of the x expression, you must add 36 X 25 to balance the equation

36%28x%5E2-10x%2B25%29-25%28y%5E2-4y%2B4%29=100%2B%2836%2A25%29-%2825%2A4%29...or36%28x-5%29%5E2-25%28y-2%29%5E2=100%2B900-100...or

6%5E2%28x-5%29%5E2-5%5E2%28y-2%29%5E2=30%5E2
