Question 682268: Greetings, I am doing homework on a website.
Here is the problem: Write a quadratic function to model the graph (a graph is provided but is not vital for the tutor to understand my question.).
The coordinates of the vertex are (h,k)= (3,2)
when substituted the values into the equation f%28x%29=a%28x-h%29%5E2%2Bk the equation becomes
f%28x%29=a%28x-9%29%5E2%2B2
Why is h=3 in the ordered pair of the vertex but it is 9 in the vertex form equation?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

whoever put it in the vertex form equation f%28x%29=a%28x-9%29%5E2%2B2 is wrong
if you are given the equation f%28x%29=a%28x-h%29%5E2%2Bk
and the vertex at (h,k)= (3,2), means that h=3 and k=2
then you have f%28x%29=a%28x-3%29%5E2%2B2, NOT f%28x%29=a%28x-9%29%5E2%2B2; here h is squared and that is incorrect
