If is the measure of the width of the walkway, then the over all length must be and the overall width must be (because the deck is on all four sides).
Since area is given by length times width:
FOIL the two binomials, then put the quadratic into standard form. Solve for but discard the negative root. (unless you want to build the deck out of anti-matter and give it a negative dimension that is).
