I would say that a is 8 since 8 plus 8 equals 16.

ignore dizzydee's solution - it is badly wrong!

answer is:
a%5E2+=+16 --> take square root of both sides
a+=+%2Bsqrt%2816%29 OR a+=+-sqrt%2816%29 --> taking a square root ALWAYS generates 2 answers!!! So,

a=+4 or a=-4
