You're not solving.  You can only solve when there is an equal sign " = ".

There is no " = " sign so you are not solving.  Then what are you

doing? You're SIMPLIFYING, not solving.

8(x + 2) - 4x + 7

Remove the parentheses using the distributive property:

8x + 16 - 4x + 7

Now combine like terms.  Combine the 8x and the -4x getting 4x.
Combine the +16 and the +7 and get +23, so the final answer is

4x + 23.
