In order to solve a quadratic equation, you need to have the right side be equal to zero.

So, step 1 with your problem is to add -196 to both sides:

x%5E2-2x%2B1-196=196-196

x%5E2-2x-195=0

Ok, this looks a little ugly, but in fact it factors.

From the looks of the original problem, I suspect that this is all you need because you have already been solving quadratics, at least by factoring. Therefore, I'll quit here. Write back if you want me to take you through the steps of factoring.
