Hello Ellen,

x%5E2%2B12x-64=0

Move the constant to the right
x%5E2%2B12x=64

Multiply it by 4
4x%5E2%2B48x=256

Set equal to zero
4x%5E2%2B48x-256=0

Factor
%284x-64%29%28x%2B4%29=0

Set each equal to zero and solve
4x-64=0
4x=64
x=16

x%2B4=0
x=-4

Solutions: x=16;-4.
