subtracting 3 __ p-3=sqrt(-4p+17) __ squaring __ p^2-6p+9=-4p+17 __ adding 4p-17 __ p^2-2p-8=0

factoring __ (p-4)(p+2)=0

p-4=0 __ p=4

p+2=0 __ p=-2
