Question 1203904: The Sport Shop in town sells bicycles and tricycles.
While looking around, Alyson counted 133 wheels and 45 total cycles.
How many tricycles are in the store?
While you may find the number of bicycles, do not include that in your answer.
I know the answer is 43 but how?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The Sport Shop in town sells bicycles and tricycles.
Total cycles 45
Bicycle 2 wheels let number be x
tricycles 3 wheels The number will be (45-x)
Total wheels
2x+3(45-x)=133
2x +135-3x = 133
x=2
Bicycles =2
Tricycles = 43

Very simple to do using Elimination Method, maybe most of or all of it in your head.

I know the answer is 43 but how?

Let number of tricycles be T
Then number of bicycles = 45 - T
Number of wheels on bicycles and tricycles are 2 and 3, respectively
With total number of wheels being 133, we get: 3T + 2(45 - T) = 133
                                                 3T + 90 - 2T = 133
                                                      3T - 2T = 133 - 90
                                Number of tricycles, or T = 43

Probably a formal algebraic solution was wanted....

But you can get good problem-solving practice by solving this problem informally, using logical reasoning and simple arithmetic.

If all cycles were bicycles, the number of wheels would be 45*2 = 90. But the number of wheels is 133, which is 133-90 = 43 more.

Since each tricycle has 1 more wheel than each bicycle, the number of tricycles must be 43.

ANSWER: 43
