Question 1146009: The Formula for the speed of DR
---
336G
S=speed of the car in miles per hour(MPH), D=tire diameter, R=engine speed in revolutions per minute(RPM). and G=gear ratio
Calculate the gear ratio necessary to achieve a speed of 142 MPH in a car with 30 inch diameter tires and an engine speed of 4000 RPM's, rounded to the one decimal place.
I know (S)=142 (D)=30 (R)=4000 And I need to find G. I believe I need to isolate it in the problem but I'm not sure how to do it. Please help I believe if I can see how this problem is done it will help me understand the rest of my homework. Thank you
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The Formula for the speed: S =
S =
Multiply both sides by G
S*G =
Divide both sides by S
G =
"Calculate the gear ratio necessary to achieve a speed of 142 MPH in a car with 30 inch diameter tires and an engine speed of 4000 RPM's,"
G =
G =
G = 2.5 is the gear ratio
