Starting with x%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0, and assigning roots as p and q, and working with the roots from use of quadratic formula,

system%28p%2Bq=-b%2Cpq=c%29


If p and q are to be roots for x%5E2%2Bpx%2Bq=0 then this system should be possible:


system%28p%2Bq=-p%2Cpq=q%29

The second of these means p=1; and substituting into the first of these gives a way to solve for q.
