In this video lesson, first I explain what is meant by a quadratic function- I do this by comparing them to linear functions. I also explain why these functions are called quadratic: it's because there has to be an x squared term, and a square is one type of quadrilateral, so this is where the root "quad" comes from. I show that there are some functions that don't look like they are quadratic, but they are if you simplify. Finally, the graph of a quadratic function is called a parabola. It can have x and y intercepts, just like lines, but it also has a vertex and there are parabolas that open up and open down. For more details, see the video!
