Question 288289: I need to complete the square: 2x%5E2%2B10x-3+=0
I've been using 2x%5E2%2B4x-1=0 to figure out the formula since I know the answer to this second one.
I used the Complete the Square Solver on here, but it comes up with a different answer than the book.
The formula I'm using is: x=-4 +or- square root of (4)^2-4(2)(-1) over 2(2)
so, -4+or- square root of 16 + 8 over 4
then -4+or- square root of 24 over 4
then -4+or- 2 times square root of 6 over 4
after simplifying, i get -1+or- square root of 6 over 2.
My book says the answer is -2+or- square root of 6 over 2.
Where did I go wrong?? If I can't solve THIS one, then I know I can't solve the others.
Could somebody please explain where I messed up? I'm assuming I should have multiplied something by 2 somewhere along the way to come up with the book answer, but I can't figure out where or more importantly, WHY.
Thanks for any help given, I appreciate it!

Question 288296: I asked this problem earlier, but have learned how to type it so that it is easier for you to read and understand. I need to square this problem.
Problem: 2x^2+4x-1=0
Formula I used was: %28-4%2B-sqrt%284%5E2-4%2A2%2A-1%29%29%2F%282%2A2%29
I got:
%28-4%2B-sqrt%2816-4%2A2%2A-1%29%29%2F%282%2A2%29
then %28-4%2B-sqrt%2816%2B8%29%29%2F%282%2A2%29

then %28-4%2B-2sqrt%286%29%29%2F%282%2A2%29 (this is supposed to read "+ or - 2" not -2)
then %28-4%2B-2sqrt%286%29%29%2F%284%29 (this is supposed to read "+ or - 2", not -2)
then after simplifying, I get
%28-1%2B-sqrt%286%29%29%2F%282%29
My book says the answer is: %28-2%2B-sqrt%286%29%29%2F%282%29
I can't figure out where I went wrong, so I can't answer my real question of 2x^2+10x-3=0.

Question 288313: This word problem pertains to "REVENUE".
The demand for a certain product is given by p=26-.01x, where x is the number of units sold per month and p is the price, in dollars, at which each item is sold. The monthly revenue is given by R=xp. What number of items sold produces a monthly revenue of $16,500.
I was on a roll for a while, but now I'm stuck again. I missed class last week (job sent me out of country) and I seriously don't even know where to begin with this. The book doesn't clearly state what I should do with this problem (like if I should use the quadratic formula or something along those lines) and I can't find any examples similar to it to try and work with.
I was thinking something like:
$16,500=x(26-.01x)
so, $16,500=26x-2.86x^2
then, divide the left side by 2?
so, $16,500=13x-1.43x
then, $16,500=11.57x
Okay, so then it would be $1,426.10=x?
This doesn't seem right.
Could somebody please explain how I am supposed to find the solution for this type of problem?
Thanks! Any help is appreciated!

Suppose the demand and price for a multiday vitamin are related by p= .0020q + 1, where p is the price (in dollars) of a 30 day supply. If the demand is related to the price by p = -.0030q + 24.99.

What are the equilibrium quantity and price?

Answer:

.0020q + 1 = -.0030q + 24.99

10q = 24.98

q = 2.498

p= .0020 (2.498) + 1 = 5.996 or $6.00

equilibrium quantity is 2.498 vitamins at an equilibrium price of $6.00
