x^2 + 6x + 4 = 0
x^2 + 6x + __ = -4
Find the value that completes the square, the coefficient of x/2 squared
(6/2)^2 = 9, add to both sides
x^2 + 6x + 9 = -4 + 9
x^2 + 6x + 9 = 5
therefore
(x+3)^2 = 5
Find the square root of both sides
x + 3 = +/-sqrt%285%29
Two solutions
x = -3 + sqrt%285%29
and
x = -3 - sqrt%285%29
