Question 645592: I'm working on quadratic equations with one variable using the quadratic formula. The step I am stuck on involves square roots. The step is as follows: y = -4 plus or minus the square root of -24 over (divided by) 4. I know that the answer (the software I use allows me to see the solution)is y = -4 plus or minus 2 square root of 6 i over 4. What I don't get is where the 2 in front of the square root symbol comes from. I have encountered a few of these problems and cannot work the solution out on my own.

Hi,
y+=+%28-4+%2B-+sqrt%28+-24+%29%29%2F%284%29+
y+=+%28-4+%2B-+sqrt%28+-1%2A4%2A6+%29%29%2F%284%29+ |Note: sqrt%28-1%29+=+i and sqrt%284%29+=+2
y+=+%28-4+%2B-+2i%2Asqrt%286+%29%29%2F%284%29+
