Solve a) x^2+7x-10=0

Write

x%5E2%2B7x-10=0

as

1x%5E2%2B7x-10=0

and compare it to

ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0

and notice that a=1, b=7, and c=-10

Then substitute in the quadratic formula

 x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+

and get

 x+=+%28-%287%29+%2B-+sqrt%28+%287%29%5E2-4%2A%281%29%2A%28-10%29+%29%29%2F%282%2A%281%29%29+

Then simplify:

 x+=+%28-7+%2B-+sqrt%2849%2B40%29+%29%2F2+

 x+=+%28-7+%2B-+sqrt%2889%29+%29%2F2+

which is really two answers:
