You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The solutions below take advantage of the fact that the variable is already in a perfect square. There are other ways to solve these (which take a little longer).

a. 14%2B%28x%2B12%29%5E2=35
Subtract 14 from each side (isolating the perfect square):
%28x%2B12%29%5E2+=+21
Find the square root of each side:
abs%28x%2B12%29+=+sqrt%2821%29
x%2B12+=+0+%2B-+sqrt%2821%29
Subtract 12 (or add a -12):
x+=+-12+%2B-+sqrt%2821%29

b. -20%2B%28x-5%29%5E2=3
Add 20 to both sides (to isoloate the perfect square):
%28x-5%29%5E2+=+23
Find the square root of each side:
abs%28x-5%29+=+sqrt%2823%29
x-5+=+0+%2B-+sqrt%2823%29
Add 5 to each side:
x+=+5+%2B-+sqrt%2823%29
