the dicriminate is used to find out how many real or imaginary solutions there are in a quadratic polynomial...
the equation for this is ... b^2-4ac...
if you find out that the quadratic can be factored, then go ahead...
but if there are imaginary solutions, it is better to use the quadratic equation..(-b plus or minus the sqrt of [b^2-4ac] all over 2a ...
