Question 246187: Please help me solve this word problem.
The perimeter of a rectangle is 210ft. The length is 15ft. less than twice the width. What is the length and the width?
I have tried dividing 210 by 6, getting 35 for each width, and 70 for each length. Then I added the widths (35+35), to get 70. I subtracted 15 from 70 and got a sum of 55 and divided that by 2 getting(27.5). I then added 15 to both of my lengths (15+70+70), and divided that by 2 getting 77.5. Am I correct that the length is 77.5ft., and the width is 27.5ft.?

Question 247094: The ratio of men to women at a certain company is 7 to 4. How many employees does the company have if there are 35 male employees?
In which way 7men and 4women combine like 35men and "some given" women? Proportions are fractions. So 7/4=1.75 (read 7 divided by 4 equal 1.75) must be the same (equal) to 35/some number=1.75.
So what is that number? Well, try with the most simple equivalent example to unlock the mistery. For instance, if the numbers were 6/what number?=2 which answer would it be?. Then you know that the "what number?* is 3 because you saw, intuitively, that there are 3 groups of 2 objects making a total of 6 object. In other words, you did 6/2=3. So do the same with the "more complicated" numbers of the questions.
35/what number?= 1.75
The answer is 35/1.75=20
So now we know that there are 20 women.
So in total there are 35 men and 20 women. 35+20=55 employees in total.

Question 248248: Hello, kind tutor!
Having a work problem concerning dilutions, and therefore ratios.
We took 30 microliters of a stock, and added it to 270 microliters of saline to make 300 microliters of a 1:10 dilution. We then took this 300 microliters and added 100 microliters of another solution to that to form 400 microliters total.
2 questions regarding this: What would the second dilution (300 microliters + 100 microliters) be considered? 3:4?
And, what would the final dilution be?
My boss and another coworker said it would end up being 1:13.3, (roughly 1:13), but I could not understand how they arrived at that number.
Thank you very much for your kind assistance,
Lauren
