Question 546943: If 6 workers can build one house in 3 days, how many workers will it take to build 1 house in one day? Assume all workers work at the same rate. Show your work.
(I know the Answer is 18 but I can't figure out how to do it mathematically instead of logically; ie, showing my work. The teacher was saying something about the "over/under method" but I don't know what that means....) Answer by htmentor(1343) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! It takes 6 workers 3 days to build one house. So the rate of building is:
1 house/(6 workers*3 days) = 1 house per 18 worker-days
To build in one day we need
1 house/18 worker-days * 1 day = 1 house per 18 workers
Therefore it takes 18 workers to build 1 house in 1 day
