The( number of history textbooks sold was 45 less than the number) of chemistry textbooks sold "x"
Question States:
 (x-45) + x = 247
         2x = 292
          x = 146, the number of Chemistry books sold.
    and  101 the number of History books sold.   146-45

 146 + 101 = 247 checks.
