You can put this solution on YOUR website! Need help with this word problem, please, for my 7th grader.
Carrie scored 10 points for every eight points that Alan scored. If the two scored a total of 90 points, how many points did each person score?
------------
C = (10/8)*A
C + A = 90
--------------
Sub for C in the 2nd equation.
The condition implies that you can group the points in sets (10 points of Carrie + 8 points of Alan), so each such set has 10+8 = 18 points.
Since Carrie and Alan earned 90 points together, it means that there are 5 = such sets.
Thus Carrie earned 10*5 = 50 points and Alan earned 8*5 = 40 points. ANSWER
It is the way to solve this problem MENTALLY (and momentarily).
