Question 967140: I did a test, and got this problem wrong. I'm still pretty unsure of what I did wrong since no one around me could help me. I tried getting my teacher to help, but her way of teaching was confusing. I believe you guys would be able to explain better. Thank you for helping! God bless!

Question:

Jesse is playing a game with her brother. She writes a mathematical statement and shows her brother two cards with different mathematical equations. She writes the following statement and shows two cards.

There are five times as many sixth graders as eighth graders here.

Card 1 : 5 x S = E

Card 2 : 5 x E = S

1. Which equation ( card ) matches the statement?

2. Write a new statement for the other card.

Jesse writes a second mathematical statement and shows her brother it with different mathematical equations.

Fifteen less than Jesse's age is 6 more than Tanya's age.

Card 1 : 15-J=6+T

Card 2 : J-15=T+6

3. Which equation ( card ) matches the statement?

4. Write a new statement for the other card.

Jesse writes the following statement.

The number of students in the class (x) will be divided into teams of 4, except one team will have 5, resulting in 8 teams in all.

5. Write a mathematical equation for the statement above.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The way you can handle the Jesse & Brother question is to try to translate as a ratio:

S for sixth graders;
E for eigth graders;

Five times as many S than/as E:

Notice the form of statement shown on cards 1 and 2. Linear relationship.
S%2FE=5
%28S%2FE%29%2AE=5%2AE
