sqrt%28x-5%29 = sqrt%28x%29-1
square both sides, the right side has to be FOILed
x - 5 = x - 2sqrt%28x%29 + 1
combine like terms on the left
x - x - 5 - 1 = 2sqrt%28x%29
-6 = 2sqrt%28x%29
Divide both sides by 2
-3 = sqrt%28x%29
square both sides
9 = x
