Make sure you have basic knowledge. Everything you learned starting with K-grade to 9th grade is NEEDED. In math you just CAN’T disregard something you learned in previous grades because everything is connected.

With basic knowledge of mathematics, as well as understanding each math question, it can become relatively easy to find solution to any problem. It helps if you have a firm foundation in algebra and know how to manipulate equations, as these are the cornerstones of math in school and even college, and are really the most basic of basics.

Don't try just get an answer, try to get the logic (reasoning) behind each solution step, pay attention to the reason for each step toward solution.
When in class and the teacher is talking, try taking notes:
write down steps, do the graphs, write the main points of what the teacher says about how to understand and do problems
Writing that down may help or force you to pay attention and to try to "get it." Don't just write everything down without ever understanding what it means and why (focus on that), or try to write down the key points somewhere on a piece of paper and file it somewhere after each math lesson. But, it’s also crucial to ASK your teacher (when in classroom) and us here for explanation to any question you might have. UNDERSTANDING is the key to success.
Therefore, focus on the reason/reasoning "not" on getting one answer. If a problem can have more than one way of being solved, write down all of those ways looking for the "reasoning" in each, also looking for similarities and differences in the way of solving. This is because most math problems have an easy, general way that skips the steps and reasons for the steps, and a hard, formal way with all of the steps for reasoning out that answer
Spend a lot of time PRACTICING, not doing it for few weeks will make you forget the principles of it. This may not be true with elementary math, but with higher math, applications of math such as statistics and mechanics (physics), lack of practice will really ruin your chances at solving those math problems.
Or if you need to show an expression is positive or negative, and cannot do it algebraically, a graphical method might help. Basically, be creative in math problems and the answer will be there.
Finally, post your questions here and you will get step-by-step solutions and you might get solution to your problem in more than one way.
