Side length increased by 10% --> side length multiplied by 1.10, or 1.1. (1+10% = 1+.10 = 1.10)

If the side length gets multiplied by 1.1, the area (side length squared) gets multiplied by (1.1)^2 = 1.21 = 1+.21 --> area gets increased by .21, or 21%.
