The shadow of a nearby telephone is 40 feet.
How tall is the telephone pole?

Let t = height of the tel pole
:
This involves two similar right triangles, similar because the angle to the
sun is the same for each.
The relationship of the sides 6' & 8' is the same as the relationship of t and 40'
Write a ratio equation and solve for t
6%2F8 = t%2F40
Cross multiply
8t = 6 * 40
8t = 240
t = 240%2F8
t = 30 ft is the height of the tower
