Think about it. Why did they give both the price of the jeans and how much the total was?


Taking the given information: (The total price of just the jeans is the subtotal)
116.55-(37*3)
116.55-111
5.55


So now you have 5.55 is the amount of tax paid on the jeans in total.


So you take the amount of taxes (5.55) and divide by the subtotal (111)


5.55/111= .05 or 5%
