Question 390801: I have a math problem with area and percent. I am so frustrated not sure what the formula would be to work out the problem. Here is the problem;
The circle graph shows the land area of each of the seven continents in square miles. The total land area of the seven continents is 57,240,000. This is the question in my book. What percent of the total land area is the land area of Australia?
Australia is 2,970,000. How do I work this problem out step by step? I have more problems like this and need to learn how to solve these problems. I really need a written example so that I will be able to follow it step by step and practice so I can become a better student.
I thank you so very much.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! a percent(age) is just a fraction based on 100 ___ the numerator (top) is the percent and the denominator (bottom) is 100
the most straight forward technique is to make the fraction and then enter it into a calculator , which will generate a decimal
the decimal can then be changed to a percent by moving the decimal point two places to the right
in this case ___ 2970000/57240000 = .0519 (approx)
moving the decimal point ___ Australia makes up 5.19% of the total land area
