There's no reason to use logs, it's just a fraction.

= %285.16e17%2F7.13%29
= 0.723e17
= 7.23e16 or 7.23*10^16

Are logarithms required for this?

Not unless you only have log tables available but no calculator and no slide rule. Also, logs required ONLY if the problem instructions tells you to use logarithms.

You could use logarithms, just for the two numbers of three significant figures each, separately from the 10%5E17 part. Just for that, use log%28%285.16%29%29-log%28%287.13%29%29, and then find ANTILOG of that result; and combine properly with your 10%5E17 part.

Either way, you should get about 0.724%2A10%5E17=highlight%287.24%2A10%5E16%29 .

Note the exponent on the answer is correct in the response from tutor Alan354.

Tutor josgartihmetic had an error in her work and ended up with the wrong exponent....
