Say that he ambled at a rate = r in miles/year
Then he tripled his pace to rate = 3r
(rate for 1st year * 1 year) + (rate for next 10 years * 10 years) = 3100
r*1 + 3r*10 = 3100
r(1 + 30) = 3100
r = 100 miles/year
so, he ambled 100 miles the 1st year
