Question 465856: Hi Everyone :)
I am taking a math class and our first thing we are doing is geometry, can someone please help me with his problem, I have never done geomery so any assistance will be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you :)

Complementary angles add up to 90 degrees (when you put them together, they make a right angle). If I call the angle you're looking for x, then 89%2Bx=90...subtract 89 on both sides, and your missing angle is 1 degree.

I know the question didn't ask this, but another term you'll run into is "supplementary angle". Supplementary angles add to 180...you'd do the exact same thing we just did, except it would equal 180 instead of 90.

The definition of a complementary angle is the measure of an angle that when added to a given angle makes the sum of the two angles equal 90 degrees.
.
For this problem, you were given an angle of 89 degrees. How big an angle would you have to add to it to make it become 90 degrees?
.
The answer is 1 degree. The complementary angle for 89 degrees is 1 degree.
.
You are also going to learn about supplementary angles. To give you a head start, the supplementary angle is the measure of angle you have to add to a given angle to make the sum equal 180 degrees. For example, what is the measure of the supplementary angle for 89 degrees? (How many degrees do you have to add to 89 degrees to make the sum equal 180 degrees?) The answer is 180 minus 89, which is 91 degrees.
.
Hope this helps, and good luck on your journey through geometry. Hopefully it is a fun trip for you.

Complementary angles, by definition, add up to 90 degrees, so the complement of 89 degrees is 90 - 89 = 1 degree.

Similarly, you'll see the other definition, supplementary angles. They are similar, except that the two angles sum up to 180, not 90.

The concept of complementary and supplementary angles is extremely useful in geometry. However I rarely see these words in advanced geometry problems, mainly because the question will be worded something like "Prove that ABC + CBD = 90" instead of "Prove that ABC and CBD are complementary" (possibly because foreign students might not know the terminology). But on certain problems involving parallel lines or right angles, this concept is crucial.
