Question 847106: Translate the following phrases into mathematical expressions:
#1. (-8) subtracted from 4 first, and then that total divided by 4.
#2. 5 multiplied by 9 first, and then 6 added to that total.
Thanks for the help, need answers ASAP. Already have answers in mind and want to make sure they are correct. Thank you!
P.S.
If you wanted to know what I thought the answers were, here are my conclusions:
For #1: [4-(-8)]/4 ...(by the way, the forward slash means divided by)
For #2: 5*9+6 (this one was easier)

Question 409167: I have been studying all day and doing practice problems from my math book to get me ready for a test. I am stuck at 3.1 in my book. I am to this point and i do not understand how to solve a problem like the following:
simplifying expressions:
3+6(w+2)+w
I know I have to use the distributive property, Where I am confused is what do I do with 3+6 Do i add this and then use the answer to distribute over (w+2) and then add +w? I just really need to know the steps so that i can practice more problems like these

Question 848945: Refer back to Week One Discussion and use the names and ages of yourself and the other two people you selected. Make sure one is older than you and one is younger than you.
Me- 28 years old, my brother 30 and my son 4
In years, how old was the older person when you were born? 2
this is where I'm having trouble...........
1.)Write an equation that models how old in years each of you will be, when your ages add up to 150 years old. For example, if x = your age and the eldest person was a year older than you, you would write their age as x + 1. Then the equation would be: x + (x+1) = 150.
Explain the reasoning which helped you develop your equation.
2.)Solve for your future ages. Are your answers reasonable, do they add up to 150?
In years, how old were you when the youngest person was born?
3.)At some point during the lives of you and the youngest person, your age will be three times his/her age at that moment. Write an equation which models how old in years each of you will be when you are three times as old as the younger person.
Explain the reasoning which helped you develop your equation.
4.)
Solve the equation for your ages when you are three times as old as the youngest person. Are your answers reasonable?

Question 854239: Hi, can you please help me with one surd expression and explain the answer to the second surd expression? (I'm sorry if the topic is wrong)
Firstly, the questions states, "Expand and simplify: -3√6 (2√3 - 3√8)." My calculator says the answer is 36√3 - 18√2, yet my answer is always -6√18 - 9√48. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.
Secondly, I am having trouble understanding this example, "Given that x = 5√2 - 3, find x-1/x." The answer to this question is:
x - 1/x = 5√2 - 3 - 1/5√2-3
= 5√2 - 3 - (5√2 + 3/41)
=(5√2 - 3)/1 * 41/41 - (5√2 +3/41)
= 205√2 - 123 - (5v2 + 3)/41
= 200√2 - 126/41
What I don't understand is where the 41 comes from.
Thank you so much for your help in advanced!
