Question 934474: Thank you in advance for your help!!!
Question:
Annilee’s present age is two-thirds of Jessie’s present age. In 12 years the sum of their ages will be 54 years. Find their present ages.
My Attempt:
Let a = Annilee's age
j = Jessie's age

Then Annilee's current age is:
a = 2/3 j
Then 12 years into the future Annilee's age will be:
a = 2/3 j + 12
And Jessie's age will be:
j + 12
With the sum of these two ages equaling 54
Therefore, the equation I worked out was:
2/3(j+12) + (j+12) = 54
3[2/3(j+12)] + 3(j+12) = 3(54)
2(j+12) + 3j + 36 = 162
2j + 24 + 3j + 36 = 162
5j + 60 = 162
5j + 60 - 60 = 162 - 60
5j = 102
5j/5 = 102/5
j = 20.4
Therefore, Jessie's present age is 20.4 years and Annilee's present age is:
2/3 * 20.4 = 13.6 years
I don't think my answer is right. Thank you very much for checking it for me

Question 934476: Thank you very much for taking the time to help me!
My question relates to fractional algebra.

Question:
Sydney’s present age is one-half of Marcus’s present age. In 12 years, Sydney’s age will be five-eighths of Marcus’s age. Find their present ages

My Attempt:
Let:
s = Sydney's age
m = Marcus's age
Therefore:
Sydney's current age = 1/2m
In 12 years time:
s = 5/8(m + 12)
m = m + 12

The equation I set up is:
5/8(m+12) = m + 12

8 [5/8(m + 12)] = 8 (m + 12)
5(m + 12) = 8m + 96
5m + 60 = 8m + 96
5m - 8m + 60 = 8m - 8m +96
-3m + 60 = 96
-3m + 60 - 60 = 96 - 60
-3m = 36

-3m/3 = 36/3
-m = 12
m = -12
Obviously this is the wrong answer as an age cannot be negative. Also, the textbook provided me with the answer of 18 for Sydney and 36 for Marcus.
Thank you very much for all your help.
Kind regards,
Mark Beaton

Question 934664: Dear sir/madam,
Thank you very much for taking the time to help me.

This is my problem:
The sum of the present ages of Ian and his brother is 45. In 5 years, Ian’s age will be five-sixths of his brother’s age. Find their present ages.

And this is my attempt:
Let: i = Ian's current age
b = Ian's brother's current age
Therefore, the equation for their current ages is:
i + b = 45
And in 5 years time:
(5/6)b + 5 + b + 5 = 45 + 5
(5/6)b + (6/6)b + 10 = 6(50)
5b + 6b + 10 = 300
11b +10 = 300
11b +10 - 10 = 300 - 10
11b = 290
11b/11 = 290/11
b = 26.36
Working this answer back into the original equation I get 58.32 which does not equal 50 (i.e. 45 + 5)
Thank you kindly for you help.
Kindest regards,
Mark Beaton
