Question 809982: A boy steps off a 17.6 foot high diving board with no initial vertical velocity, obeying the law
h=-16t^2+vt+s
where v is the velocity, t is in seconds, and so is the initial height.
How long does it take him to hit the water?
Answer in units of sec
If, instead, he springs off the diving board
with an initial vertical velocity of 6.7 ft/s,
how long does it take him to hit the water?
Answer in units of sec
How do you go about doing this problem ? I'm pretty confused. Thanks for any help. Much is appreciated.

Question 810656: Kaye has an arrangement with her father where he pays her $5 for every maths test she passes and fines her $10 for every test she fails. Last year Kaye sat 9 tests and altogether her father paid her $15. How many tests did Kaye pass?
I must work this out with algebra but using a diagram I have worked out that she failed 2 and passed 7. Cna you help me with the algebra please. This is what I have tried so far:
Let p = pass and f = fail. f = -10 so p = f + 15
5p-10f=15
5(f+15) -10f=15
5f +75 -10f = 15
-5f + 75 = 15
(-75)
-5f = -60
(divided by -5)
f = 12
Please correct any of my working or feel free to start over :) Thanks so much in advance

Question 810708:

Question #8 / 20
Students at a major university are complaining of a serious housing crunch. Many of the university's students, they complain, have to commute too far to school because there is not enough housing near campus. The university officials respond with the following information: the mean distance commuted to school by students is miles, and the standard deviation of the distance commuted is miles.
Assuming that the university officials' information is correct, complete the following statements about the distribution of commute distances for students at this university.

(a) According to Chebyshev's theorem, at least of the commute distances lie between 11.0 miles and 23.4 miles.
(b) According to Chebyshev's theorem, at least 36% of the commute distances lie between
miles
and
miles
. (Round your answer to 1 decimal place.)
(c) Suppose that the distribution is bell-shaped. According to the empirical rule, approximately 68% of the commute distances lie between
miles
and
miles
.
(d) Suppose that the distribution is bell-shaped. According to the empirical rule, approximately of the commute distances lie between 11.0 miles and 23.4 miles.
