Let the completed job = 1

That means each one will do a fraction of the job and the two fractions = 1
:
J's fraction + H's fraction = completed job
x%2F4 + x%2F6 = 1

Multiply the equation by 12, to get rid of the denominators:
12*x%2F4 + 12*x%2F6 = 12(1)

Cancel out the denominators, and you have a simple equation:
3x + 2x = 12

5x = 12
:
x = 12/5
:
x = 2.4 hrs, (not sure why you have 2.42 hrs as the answer)
