Question 985257: Hi, I have a worded question on which I am experiencing extreme trouble with. I was hoping you could help me with? the question states, "Ms. Aquay Shun invested a fourth of her money in stocks, a fifth of her money in a frozen yogurt store and a sixth of her money in her child's college fund. She put the remaining $32,000 in the bank. What is the total amount she has invested or saved." Thanks.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
She starts with some p dollars and splits it into different parts, some for investing and some for the bank account.

She invests p%2F4%2Bp%2F5%2Bp%2F6 dollars and has 32000 put into the bank.

highlight_green%28p=%28p%2F4%2Bp%2F5%2Bp%2F6%29%2B32000%29, or the sum of all portions of the money is equal to the whole amount p with which she starts.

L.C.D. is 2%2A2%2A3%2A5=60. You can make your first step:

p-%28p%2F4%2Bp%2F5%2Bp%2F6%29=32000

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let  x  be the total amount of the money Ms. Aquay Shun invested.

Then she invested  x%2F4  dollars in stocks,  another  x%2F5  dollars in a frozen yogurt store,  and yet another  x%2F6  dollars in her child's college fund  (very wisely!).

In total,  Ms. Aquay Shun invested so far  x%2F4 + x%2F5 + x%2F6 dollars,  or  (using the common denominator,  which is  60)

%2815x+%2B+12x+%2B+10x%29%2F60 = 37x%2F60  dollars.

How much did she invested in the bank? - The rest,  i.e.   x - 37x%2F60 = %28%2860+-+37%29x%29%2F60 = 23x%2F60.  And it is exactly $32,000.

So,  you have an equation

23x%2F60 = 32000.

It gives you  x = %2832000%2A60%29%2F23 = $83478.26.

Answer.  The total amount Ms. Aquay Shun has invested is  $83478.26.
