Question 954227: The answer to this equation:
0+50*1-60-60*0+10=?
My answer is 10. However, a friend is insisting the answer is 0. They arrive at 0 because they did the multiplication first. I was taught to only do brackeded sections first and that if there are no brackets or parenthises in the equation, then it must be approached left to right. My question is, isn't it correct to solve by performing each calculation from left to right? I have never heard of any rule that permits one to jump ahead directly to multiplication or any other calculation unless there are parenthisis or brackets in the equation.

The answer is 0
Rule states evaluate the expression from left to right doing multiplication and division in the order they appear, then evaluate the expression from left to right doing addition and subtraction in the order they appear. Also evaluate expressions in parenthesis in the same manner.
therefore,
0+50*1-60-60*0+10 = 0+50-60-0+10 = -10+10 = 0

PEMDAS: Please excuse my dear aunt Sally: The standard order of operations:
Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction
This is the order of precedence for operations. If a term is preceded by one operation and followed by another operation, the highest precedence operation is performed first (i.e, multiply or divide before adding).
0+50*1-60-60*0+10=0 ANSWER:The correct answer is 0.

The answer to this equation:
0+50*1-60-60*0+10=?
My answer is 10. However, a friend is insisting the answer is 0. They arrive at 0 because they did the multiplication first. I was taught to only do brackeded sections first and that if there are no brackets or parenthises in the equation, then it must be approached left to right. No parentheses, or brackets exist, but before applying order of operations, or PEMDAS, you'll need
to place parentheses yourself. Therefore,
0+%2B+50+%2A+1+-+60+-+60+%2A+0+%2B+10 becomes:
0+%2B+%2850+%2A+1%29+-+60+-+%2860+%2A+0%29+%2B+10, which results in:
0+%2B+50+-+60+-+0+%2B+10.
Now you can perform the operations, from left to right since you're now left with additions and subtractions.
