Question 935148: Hello!
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm having trouble with this problem:
0.92 + 0.9(x - 0.3) = 2x - 5.95

My attempt at a solution:

100(0.92) + 100[0.9(x - 0.3)] = 100(2x) - 100(5.95)
92 + 9(x - 0.3) = 200x - 595
This is where I'm having trouble. I'm not sure how to proceed. This is my attempt:
92 + 9x - 2.7 = 200x - 595
I was told to multiply by a factor of 10 to remove the decimals:

10(92) + 10(9x) - 10(2.7) = 10(200x) - 10(595)

920 + 90x - 27 = 2000x - 5950
893 + 90x = 2000x - 5950
893 + 90x - 2000x = 2000x - 2000x - 5950
893 - 1910x = -5950
893 - 893 - 1910x = -5950 - 893
-1910x = -6843
-1910x/1910 = -6843/1910
-x = -3.58
x = 3.58
The textbook says the answer is 6. It looked like such as easy problem but I'm stuck on it.
I would be most grateful if you could help.
Merry Christmas!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
highlight_green%28highlight_green%280.92%2B0.9%28x-0.3%29=2x-5.95%29%29

Factors and coefficients as whole or integers numbers would be easier to use. Multiply left and right sides by 100.

92%2B90%28x-0.3%29=200x-595

You want terms of x on one side and all computatable constants on the other side. Start with the or any multplications possible.

92%2B90x-27=200x-595

Continue to simplify...

92-27=110x-595

92-27%2B595=110x

110x=660

x=660%2F110=%2833%2A2%2A10%29%2F%2811%2A10%29

Your mistake was a small arithmetic computation early in your process.

Hello!

-x = -3.58
You don't have to convert to whole numbers if you're comfortable with decimals. As seen it takes just a
few steps to solve.
.92 + .9x - .27 = 2x - 5.95
.9x - 2x = - 5.95 - .65
- 1.1x = - 6.6
