You can put this solution on YOUR website! Please Do not use CAPS on this site...so distracting for the Tutors
p = 4b + 5 0r b =
c = b + 1

c - 1 = (p-5)/4
4c - 4 = p - 5
4c + 1 = p
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! you have c = b + 1 and you have p = 4b + 5
they are asking you to express p in terms of c.
p is currently expressed in terms of b because the independent variable is b and the dependent variable is p.
that that means is you choose the value of b and the equation tells you the value of p.
the value of p is therefore dependent on the value of b.
for example, if b = 5, then p must be equal to 25 because 4 * 5 + 5 = 25.
you simply replaced b with 5 and got p = 4b + 5 becomes p = 4*5 + 5 = 25.
now you want to express p in terms of c rather than b.
you have another equation that will help you with that.
that equation is c = b + 1
solve that equation for b and you get b = c - 1
two equations you can now work with are:
p = 4b + 5
b = c - 1
since b = c - 1, you can now replace b with c - 1 in the equation of p = 4b + 5 to get:
p = 4 * (c-1) + 5
p is now expressed in terms of c.
simplify that equation to get:
p = 4c - 4 + 5
combine like terms to get:
p = 4c + 1
this is the final form of the equation that expresses p in terms of c.
you now have 2 equations for p.
the first equation expresses p in terms of b.
the second equation expresses p in terms of c.
the two equations are:
p = 4b + 5
p = 4c + 1
if you want confirm that these equations are equivalent, then do the following:
set b = 5
since you are given that c = b + 1, this means that c = 6.
you have b = 5 and c = 6
in the equation that expresses p in terms of b, replace b with 5 to get:
p = 4b + 5 becomes p = 4*5 + 5 which becomes p = 25.
in the equation that expresses p in terms of c, replace c with 6 to get:
p = 4c + 1 becomes p = 25 + 1 which becomes p = 25.
both equations get you the same answer so the equations must be equivalent to each other.
the first one expresses p in terms of b.
the second one expresses p in terms of c.
i believe your solution is selection D.
