: American Products plans to lay off 10% of its employees in its aerospace division and 15% of its employees in its agricultural division. If altogether 12% of the 3000 employees in these two divisions will be laid off, then how many employees are in each division?
the instructor wants me to learn first how to set this problem and i do not know how to do it This question is from textbook Elementary and Intermediate Algebra
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Total number of employees = 3000
No: of employees laid off = 12% of 3000
= 0.12 * 3000
= 360
Let the number of employees in aerospace division = x
Number of employees laid off here = 10% of x
= 0.1x
So the number of employees in agricultural division = 3000 - x
Number of employees laid off here = 15% of (3000-x)
= 0.15(3000-x)
= 450 - 0.15x
Total Number of employees laid off in both = 0.1x + 450 - 0.15x
Thus 0.1x + 450 - 0.15x = 360
==> - 0.05x + 450 = 360
==> -0.05x = 360 - 450
==> - 0.05x = - 90
==> x = -90/-0.05
= 1800
Thus number of employees in aerospace division = 1800
And number of employees in agricultural division = 1200
