Question 843947: The value of an uncirculated 'Mint state-65' 1950 Jefferson nickle minted in Denver is 7/4 the value a 1945 nickle minted in Philadelphia in similar condition. Together the total value of the two coins are $44. What is the value of each coin?

( I just need help solving this or laying it out in the correct order of operation. ) Thank you.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = the value of the 1950 coin
Let +b+ = the value of the 1945 coin
---------------
(1) +a+%2B+b+=+44+
(2) +a+=+%287%2F4%29%2Ab+
------------------
Substitute (2) into (1)
(1) +%287%2F4%29%2Ab+%2B+b+=+44+
Multiply both sides by +4+
(1) +7b+%2B+4b+=+176+
(1) +11b+=+176+
(1) +b+=+16+
and, since
(1) +a+%2B+b+=+44+
(1) +a+%2B+16+=+44+
(1) +a+=+44+-+16+
(1) +a+=+28+
The value of the 1950 coin is $28
The value of the 1945 coin is $16
check:
(2) +28+=+%287%2F4%29%2A16+
(2) +4%2A28+=+7%2A16+
(2) +112+=+112+
OK
