Question 75133: A picture is 4 inches longer than it is wide. It is surounded by a mat that is 2 inches wide. The total area of the mat is 112 square inches. If w is the width of the picture, which equation is true.
(w+4)(w+8)+w(w+4)=112
(w+2)(w+6)-w(w+4)=112
(w+4)(w+8)-w(w+4)=112
(w+2)(w+6)+w(w+4)=112

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The area of the picture is width X length or w(w+4)

The area of the picture and mat is; (w+4) (the width of the picture plus the mat, which is 2 inches on each side), multiplied by (w+4+4 or w+8) (the length of the picture plus the mat)

The difference in these two areas is the area of the mat itself (112) so (total area)-(area of picture)=(area of mat)

or (w+4)(w+8)-w(w+4)=112......looks like equation 3 is the winner
